We took up an offer to look after a house for a family of six since they decided to go off on holiday for a week.
As we went around the house, this room captured what I felt about this family.
Their admiration, love and imagination for each other does not go unnoticed.
It’s right there.
In the core of the family.

Excerpt from the ‘moment’:
“Just because, you know… we were on the other side of the road and we get to see something like this. I dunno, stuff like this happen and I just had this gut feeling to take this photo. Let me get out my light meter. Right, nice bit of sunlight there, dialling into f16 perhaps here to 1/125, maybe go to f11 1/250. You know what I’m talking about here. Right, that’s the shot done.”
“Happy with that shot?”
“Yeah, let’s be moving on. You can’t really complement it by standing there for a few moments more, you gotta move on from what you have taken otherwise it eats away at you. Let’s go this way to see if we can get some more snaps taken. The light is brilliant this afternoon, I have been thinking “Should I have got out the other camera or shot that on colour?”.”
“What if you did? I mean, could you have gone back [home] to pick up the other camera right now?”
“Ah, you can’t do that really. That kind of thinking doesn’t really help because I have this camera right here, right now. Maybe I’ll come back again in a few months with a renewed sense. Photography is one strange profession to delve into…”

A few months ago, my granddad died in hospital after being situated there for some time. It started off as he had a fall in his home and then since then, he developed an ear infection that infuriated him for weeks. One after the other, I saw him becoming weaker and losing weight. At this point, I asked my wife, Hannah, who is a registered staff nurse about the state of his condition and was honest by saying that he is slowly giving up the will to live. Hannah has seen situations like this before in hospitals and it is incredibly an uneasy situation to deal with. A few days later, he developed a stroke and it was pretty soon after that he had passed away.
It’s funny and strange how personal it can get to you and when you see something in the heat of the moment anywhere, the intensity of emotions of dealing with a family member passing away can lead you to finding photos that means something to you.
